This week I dropped a video reviewing a book I normally would not have chosen to read myself. It was romance (I’m picky about those), it was a fairy tale remake (not my fave), and my schedule has been a bit crazy TBH.
But I read the book, wrote a review, shot the video, edited it, and promoted it on social media. Why?
Because indie authors are self-funded and, despite the big companies consistently putting out garbage, larger review channels still won’t give them the time of day.
My first “Disney Done Better” Review was for the Kingdom of Forgotten Curses by A.R. Kaufer, a Beauty and the Beast retelling that did something a little more original than Disney did with their live-action remake.
I know better than anyone how many quality novels are put out every year that no one ever hears about because marketing is expensive, and the cost of editing, cover art, and launch week promotions are usually enough to tap out an indie author’s budget.
When I get a client who knocks it out of the park, I do what I can to signal boost them.
This latest “Disney Done Better” project is designed to help other authors, those who have written good books comparable to the franchises Disney has seen fit to treat so carelessly.
My next review is for a Star Wars-like novel and I’m looking forward to it.
As consumers, ultimately, it is up to us to decide whose art becomes successful and whose doesn’t. I have had enough of slick marketing covering up sub-standard, hollow stories.
I’m doing what I can to help the storytellers who actually care about their work.
As you write, it might feel like no one cares and no one notices. But I do. And whatever you’re working on, I look forward to reading it.
Loved it! The video was great :)
